Surat Thani Train Station
Surat Thani train station is modern concrete built train station located in the town of Phunphin, some 16 km from Surat Thani city. Surat Thani is on Thailand’s Southern train line which runs from Bangkok to Sungaikolok with branch lines to Trang and Pedang Besar. The line carries on from Pedang Besar onto Butterworth Train Station near the Malaysian island of Penang. Surat Thani is not a popular destination in its own right. The majority of the passenger who travel to Surat Thani train station do so as a connection point to destinations on both the Southern Gulf Coast and the Southern Andaman Coast.
Bus from Surat Thani train station to Surat Thani City
From Surat Thani Train Station there are two ways to travel into Surat Thani city. The more expensive option is take a taxi. There is a taxi rank to the left hand side as you exit the main train station building. The fare needs to be agreed before you get in the taxi. As of 2017 the going rate is 140 THB to 160 THB for destinations in Surat Thani city centre. The alternative is take the public orange bus from in front of Surat Thani train station. These bus depart every 15 minutes during daylight hours. They stop running after 7 pm. The fare in 18 THB but be warned the journey takes 40 to 50 minutes, compared to around 15 minutes in a taxi.

The most popular final destination for passengers alighting at Surat Thani is Koh Samui, followed by Koh Phangan, and to a lesser extent Koh Tao. For travel from Bangkok to Koh Tao it makes more sense to take the train to Chumphon and then a connecting ferry from there because this is a much quicker way to reach Koh Tao than travelling via Surat Thani.

Despite Surat Thani train station being located on the Eastern Gulf of Thailand Coast, travelling via Surat Thani is a popular and convenient way to get from Bangkok to destinations on the Western Andaman Coast of Thailand. The reason for this is simple. There are train lines on Thailand’s Western Coast. By road it is a very long journey from Bangkok to West Coast destinations such as Krabi. The journey by bus from Bangkok to Krabi takes 12 hours 25 minutes. However, the journey by bus from Surat Thani train station to Krabi takes only 3 hours after completing the majority of the journey asleep in comfortable sleeper berth of the train.
